A 5 miler which turned into 6… distracted by the snow and ice
A 5 miler which turned into 6… distracted by the snow and ice
My first ‘long run’. Ray joined me for the first four miles – great to have the company. I enjoyed running at a pace which meant I could comfortably chat and not feel too exhausted afterwards. Strange, it feels like I’m not working hard enough, but I know that the purpose of these long sunday runs is to build on my stamina and to ‘clock’ miles. I want to make sure I don’t run the risk of overtraining at any point.
Wow, wind chill – my watch kept telling me to slow down – a strange sensation, any slower and I would be walking. I guess I need to get used to these super slow ‘recovery runs’ Made healthy muffins for after run snacks. Wholemeal and lots of blueberries and walnuts.
The gritters decided that our area was not worthy of grit. However, strangely enough it felt like I was slipping less than the walkers I was sharing the pavements with. Mmm, perhaps a physics question for George Knee. A pretty run through the park (where was everyone?) I was back in the warm in under half an hour and tucking into my new homemade muesli. Ingredients include: dried dates, apricots, almonds, oats, oatbran and sunflower seeds. This weekend I hope to branch out into some granola and muffin making.
Back out again this morning, a light layer of snow underfoot, but nothing like the extreme conditions the MET office warned. Wasn’t up as early as I had hoped, so ran on empty, something which I’m hoping to avoid as the training gets more serious. I imagine for the future I will be scoffing a banana in bed, half asleep, say an hour or so before heading out. Not a particularly adventurous route but one which I know will mean that I cover the necessary distance. The second loop was through the park, and as I ran past the lake I suddenly wondered, where do all the ducks go when the water is frozen?
Day 1 in the Charlotte Knee training plan. Finally the day has descended. I am officially training for a Marathon. A steady ‘Madame Tussauds’ route, with just one other Chaser. There was a poor turn out in all, due to the impending severe snow fall (which inevitably didn’t materialize!) It snowed lightly as we ran. I set the pace as I was needed back at base for Tea Duty. The run went fairly quick, and fairly painlessly – chatting helps (but probably not for my speed) It was good to talk Marathon to a fellow Virgin Virgin Marathon runner. I washed up cups whilst conducting a Garmin tutorial – there were a few new ones adorning wrists tonight, the first meet back after Christmas.
When you are faced with a pretty hectic few months of running – new kit is essential. It makes you feel good, it makes you want to run. I splashed out – perfectly reasonable if you are running a Marathon! So, new trainers (ready to be alternated with current pair, so nicely worn in ready for the big day) new legs (Lycra) a very bright long sleeve top, some softly softly new Nike socks and some new running bras. I’m covered. In addition to clothing I’ve chosen a selection of running fuels to give a go. Most are supposed to be disgusting, some make you sick, nice, I’ll see how I go.
Today I actually went for a run – hurray! The last few days have seen a lot of sitting around ‘planning’. I’ve made lists of recipes, I’ve made documents containing strength training routines and I’ve baked another banana bread (good texture, but bananas not quite ripe enough) So, a garmin specific run – downloaded straight onto my watch. (I’ve downloaded a full 16week Marathon plan) Today I trialled a ‘Steady 4m’. After the twentieth insistent beep shouting at me to ‘speed up!’ I figured I was either extremely unfit or there was something up with the garmin. Luckily on transferring the run back at home it shows that something is up. I will need to investigate… We decided to make scrambled eggs for our post run eats. (one of the many best recovery meals which has a 4:1 ratio of carbohydrates and protein that’ll restock your energy stores and help your muscles recover.)
X training today – a late afternoon ride in Dorking, Surrey. It was a beautiful clear day, a chill picking up pace in the air. Getting there we encountered a few fails. (this on top of a late decision to make the day a bike day) I blame it on the hunger. Ray on an empty stomach can be dangerous. So, after navigating our way there sans satnav (second fail) we finally got there and set about gearing up. A fairly gentle climb to the viewing tower/tuck shop I managed to reacquaint myself with the many gears and began to try and keep up with Ray (third fail) After some fun downhill slaloms and some not so fun uphill rises I made a major fail – criticised the pro-biker’s direction and immediately lost his advice. A grumpy ride back to the car we made up on the drive home, De La Soul coaxing us into apologies. The day was saved by a kick-arse home made curry. |
