Today the sun shone, but even then it took me a while to drag myself off the sofa and venture outside with my trainers on! Today was 9m – a few laps around Wandsworth Common, finished with a quick spin of Clapham Common. Ray has decided to join me for the first half of all my long runs, which is fantastic, as it means I will stave off the potential boredom that this weekly run can sometimes incur. Sorry Ray, its in print now, no backing out. The day saw me eating cakes, and the evening was seen in with scrabble and pizza with friends. There is no guilt with food when you are Marathon training – brilliant.

Canal still frozen in parts – Easy 3m

I dropped my phone in my pint of water before leaving.

HILLS – I cannot remember the last time I punished myself with hill training. I was set to do some track, but it was still under a covering of snow, so we headed for Primrose Hill instead.

2 x 15 mins running up the hill and then jogging down, with a three minute recovery in between the sets. It was OK, but perhaps I was taking it too easy, for fear of ruining my morning run. Maki kept sneaking up behind me, over taking, and jokily commenting “come on Charlotte, I know you can go faster”. She is a machine.

Fog, so no rewarding view at the summit.

My first ‘long run’. Ray joined me for the first four miles – great to have the company. I enjoyed running at a pace which meant I could comfortably chat and not feel too exhausted afterwards. Strange, it feels like I’m not working hard enough, but I know that the purpose of these long sunday runs is to build on my stamina and to ‘clock’ miles. I want to make sure I don’t run the risk of overtraining at any point.

Wow, wind chill – my watch kept telling me to slow down – a strange sensation, any slower and I would be walking. I guess I need to get used to these super slow ‘recovery runs’

Made healthy muffins for after run snacks. Wholemeal and lots of blueberries and walnuts.

The gritters decided that our area was not worthy of grit. However, strangely enough it felt like I was slipping less than the walkers I was sharing the pavements with. Mmm, perhaps a physics question for George Knee. A pretty run through the park (where was everyone?) I was back in the warm in under half an hour and tucking into my new homemade muesli. Ingredients include: dried dates, apricots, almonds, oats, oatbran and sunflower seeds. This weekend I hope to branch out into some granola and muffin making.

Back out again this morning, a light layer of snow underfoot, but nothing like the extreme conditions the MET office warned. Wasn’t up as early as I had hoped, so ran on empty, something which I’m hoping to avoid as the training gets more serious. I imagine for the future I will be scoffing a banana in bed, half asleep, say an hour or so before heading out. Not a particularly adventurous route but one which I know will mean that I cover the necessary distance. The second loop was through the park, and as I ran past the lake I suddenly wondered, where do all the ducks go when the water is frozen?
